BE SOMEBODY NEW
So you want to roleplay. The first thing you need to do is decide on a character. since chat-based roleplaying is generally pretty free-form, you have a wide range of options. For some reason, though, people don't make the most of them. There are more vampires than you can shake a stake at, absolute legions of demonic entities, and enough were-creatures to choke a moose. And I don't even want to get started on how many of these people are Lord Of This, or Queen Of That. There are so many royals it makes me wonder if any of them have any subjects.
So my advice to you is this: be different. If you absolutely MUST be a vampire or what-have-you, then at least pick an interesting occupation. There are so many mages and mercenaries running around already that the only reason people fight is to keep unemployment from skyrocketing. Where are all the merchants, the stableboys, and the blacksmiths? These people were all essential parts of medieval life, and they aren't properly represented in roleplaying. Where would we be without our swordsmiths, our farmers, our clothmakers? Don't be intimidated by the big guns. If they are good roleplayers, they won't hurt simple folk without a good reason.
The point of roleplaying is not to kill/break things in a world of violent fantasy. The point is to have fun stepping inside someone else's skin. A lot of people tend to forget this when they create their characters, and their sessions turn into blood baths. Don't get caught in that web. Be different.
